"El Gallinero" is a shanty town located in the outskirsts of Madrid, established on the ground of an old poultry farm. With 435 inhabitants, it is considered the biggest European gypsy-romanian settlement, acording to the antropologist María José García Santacruz. The inhabitants do not have neither sinks nor latrines. They obtain the water from a pipe and their unique source of light is an electricity polelocated in the entrance of the settlement. On more than one occasion, there have been fires due to sparkles in the electric infrastructure.
